Sonny Bryan's Smoke House

Myron mentioned this place, I suppose Sonny was the father of Red Bryan who founded the steak house on Jefferson I pictured last week in its current incarnation as El Ranchito restaurant. Sonny Bryan's is located on Inwood road just North of Harry Hines Boulevard and not far south of Love Field Airport.

I poked around the 'net and tried to find out if they are related, but Dallas was founded by John Neely Bryan.

I got the impression from this post on the Dallas Historical Society BBS that Red was probably the father of Sonny. It mentions a picture of Sonny and his sister on the wall at Red Bryan's and the fact that Sonny Bryan's first opened in the early 60's. And we were eating at Red's in the late 40's.

But ya know, Myron - this sign says "Sonny Bryan's Since 1910." I wonder why.

This post on the Dallas Historical Society BBS splains it all. Briefly, Sonny was the 3rd in his family to go into the business. His grandfather Elijah was the first (in 1910) and his father William Jennings (Red) second. Hence the sign saying Barbecue Since 1910. It's a family thang, doncha know.
