Do You Know the Muffler Man?
This big fella' lives at Ken's Muffler shop at Fitzhugh and North Central Expressway (75). He's about 20 feet tall. Most common in the 50s and 60s, there are muffler men all over the USA, and many of them have been altered from their original butch, beefcake images. This one has had a hillbilly makeover. Notice the freckles and the patched denim and the straw hat. What a cornball. I love him.

Darn you phlegm. That stupid ditty has been in my head all morning. AND I CAN"T GET IT OUT. Maybe if I watch both Dead Like Me episodes I recorded last night it'll be gone.
*L* ME TOO!!! It's a curse! BTW, I LOVE the muffin man scene in Shrek - it's so cute and clever.
I love this--It'd be interesting to see other muffler men to see how they change over time and place. I think that there's probably an interesting paper to be written (or, perhaps it already has been?) on the Muffler man. I've never seen him over here in the Twin Cities, so I imagine he's a particularly Texan/Southern manifestation? You're being very productive lately--putting me to shame. Where's my camera...
northern_nomad - Actually - there is a great compendium of American muffler men over at roadsideamerica.com including lots of pictures and a muffler man map of the country. It's awesome.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is mainly a Southern and New Jersey thing - they are pretty hokey, but they are so kitcshy and cool. Besides, y'all don't need a muffler man - you have Prince.
Well, I took a bunch of photos across a span of 4 days, and prepped my posts for the next few weeks. That way I've got something queued up and ready to roll daily. It took a little time to set them all up as drafts, but as soon as I did, then bang! Zoom! Bob's your uncle.
