El Fenix Restaurant downtown
This is a great bit of 1950s signage that has been preserved intact, thankfully. The Martinez family started El Fenix restaurant ages ago, and they are a Dallas institution, with stores all over the Dallas/Fort Worth area and beyond throughout Texas. If you ever meet someone who was a kid in Texas between the 50s and the 80s, get them to sing the El Fenix song for you. We all know it by heart. Trust me.

I remember eating at an El Fenix in the late 40's when I was 8 or 9 or 10 or so. We were on the patio and there was a strolling Mariachi band. I had just learned a song in school I wanted to hear so Dad gave me a quarter and I asked them to play it. The fella got a big kick out of me wanting them to play La Cucaracha in a resteraunt.
*LOL* That IS hilarious. Very funny. Better than playing it at a funeral, I suppose!
