Why'd you have to be so cute?

At Imogen Heap's concert at McFarlin Auditorium in Dallas in November. Incredible show.

Downtown, cell phone photo

I usually post photos taken with my Canon Rebel XT, but I was finally able to download my cell phone photos from the last few months, so I thought it would be nice to have some humble shots with perhaps lower aspirations, quality-wise.

slow motion waterfall of concrete building detritus, snapped with my cell phone two weeks ago. This is an amazing de-construction of a building. It's right next to a major expressway, so I suppose they are being very deliberate with its dismantling. It does look like it's tumbling down, but this was taken on a Sunday with no one working. I love the rubble pile at the bottom, too.

Grandpa and Grandgirl at Mama's Daughters' Diner

A man takes his grand girl to lunch.

There's nothing so great as the way a grandpa adores his grand-daughter. At lunch one day in early December, I watched from the next table over as this grandpa smiled and listened patiently as the little girl spoke animatedly, prattling on about what were no doubt very important topics. It was adorable. Sweet moments.

Glass beads I just made on torch. These were meant to be pairs for earrings, but I don't think they are balanced enough...

Putting Up The Ritz

This is the under-construction Ritz-Carlton Hotel which is on McKinney just north of Downtown proper. This beautiful structure actually echoes the very best of Art Deco architecture, in my opinion. Nice.

I love this picture that captures little sections of buildings from 1900's, 1920s, 1960s 1970s 1980s.

Infomart.

Not the best shot, but it's hard to get a good shot from the major roadways that surround it which are all very heavy-traffic. This building is bigger than it looks, and is located at the Northeast quadrant of where I-35 crosses over Oak Lawn. This building is meant to look like a giant steam riverboat, or so I imagine. I wonder if any Rhett Butler-types office there?

I stand corrected: Here is the skinny on Infomart which matt g posted in comments:

Matt G said...
Nope. Not like a steamboat, but rather like the Crystal Palace of the 1851 Great Exposition. The Great Exposition was basically the original World's Fair, and they wanted to hold it in Hyde Park in London. Problem was, the exhibition hall that they were to put it into was too big, and they were going to have to clear trees-- a violation of London law in Hyde park. So they did something that was unheard of at the time-- they built a huge glass building. The Dallas Infomart is a 1.75 million square foot building that specializes in hosting information technology businesses like MCI/WorlCom and others. They have sever main communications hubs, and huge amounts of backup cooling and electrical backup onsite. It sits on 40 acres, and has an 80-something-foot high atrium inside. I was a security supervisor for their night shift for over a year, before doing the cop gig.

Well done, matt, and thanks!

Traffic light with one of the towers of the Fairmont Hotel with the Trammel Crow Center in the background. This is Field Street. Ages ago, like, at least 20 years ago, Trammel Crow Center was LTV Tower. Trammel Crow was a real estate developer who built North Park Center - a fabulous shopping mall with its primary store one as the highest-volume Neiman Marcus in the country, and he was an avid art collector. In his latter years, Crow built the Nasher Sculpture Center in the Arts District downtown, which is a world-class collection of outdoor sculpture in a garden setting.

I love this fantastic old dry cleaner sign on the west side of Maple north of Oak Lawn. The tallish glass building in the background is the home to the Dallas Observer, which is a free weekly local paper.

Fabulous mid twentieth century building on Harry Hines. This structure is simple, but I think it's beautifully designed. I love the font of the word Leader on the structure. I don't know if that name is original to the structure, but I'd love to have a loft in this building - I wish someone would re-purpose this. It could be ultra-hip, in my opinion.
